Undergoing a home renovation can be both an exciting and highly stressful time. You might be able to “rough it” in your home for a few weeks if you’re just remodeling one or two rooms. However, for a full gut renovation — or if your home is being repaired from an act of nature, etc. — you might need temporary lodging while construction is underway. Here are a few tips on where you might stay while your home is being renovated.
Friends or Family
Sometimes a good friend or relative might have an extra room or two for you and/or your family to stay while renovations take place. The up-side is that this is typically the cheapest option; the downside is that it can be uncomfortable staying in someone else’s home, and for extended stays, it can put a strain on relationships. (Also, some people simply don’t have those kinds of friends or relatives living close by.)
Hotel Stays
Hotels are usually a convenient choice for temporary stays due to renovations, and with the extra amenities and services, you can even treat it like a vacation at a resort. Some hotels are also geared toward extended stays, providing suites with kitchenettes or even full kitchens. There are usually three big challenges to hotel stays:
- They are expensive, especially over time;
- They can make you uncomfortable and claustrophobic over longer periods; and
- They may not have enough availability to accommodate extra-long stays, especially during peak seasons.
Vacation Rentals/Shared Housing Platforms
Another popular option for extended stays these days is to book a furnished home, vacation rental or apartment through platforms like Airbnb and others. These options can provide more of a home-like environment that helps during extended stays, but they can also get expensive over time, and because these units are often hosted by private individuals, the standards of quality can be inconsistent.
Temporary Corporate Housing
A fourth option to consider is to find temporary corporate housing through an agency like TP Corporate Lodging. This option gives you a fully furnished apartment with all the comforts of home, along with access to additional amenities the complex itself may provide — all for a fraction of the cost of most hotel stays. If you need to stay somewhere for several months while your home is renovated, corporate housing is often the most comfortable and affordable option.
